It’s like this. No matter the game, it’s easy to kill player characters. It takes no creativity or it’s not a challenge for the players or the GM. Like I said, just killing characters is simple and easy and half time the time they’ll aim themselves at the gun.
But what’s challenge and much more fun and interesting in my little opinion is beating them to within an inch of their lives. The characters not the players. Leaving them beaten, battered, bloodied and scarred without killing them. That’s an interesting and challenging session.
It doesn’t mean, you should go easy on them. If they pull the ancient dragon’s tail, let it eat them. But just going out on PC headhunt isn’t fun for anybody.
Here endeth my little rant.

There’s a good chance that might be a little OSR style mini-campaign (probably Swords & Wizardry) in the near future but it’s going to be for very few people. That got me thinking about henchmen and hirelings.
First, the easy part. Hirelings are 0-Level dudes. They’re the porters, torch bearers, and trap detectors (for an evil party). They have 1d4 HP, a Save of 18, and no bonus to attack. Armor Class and Weapon damage depends on what equipment they have. They never gain XP. That’s it.
Henchmen are either Fighters, Clerics, Thieves or Magic-Users. HP and Save is determined by their class. Only Fighters gain any kind of Attack Bonus. AC and Weapon Damage is determined just like the Hirelings’. They gain one level per two levels of advancement of the party and expect a share of the treasure.
Don’t bother generating any stats for these guys or keeping track of XP. I’m guessing each could easily fit on a 3 x 5 card. Hell. my very first D&D character fit on a 3×5 card.
And I know somebody will bring it up, just use the normal rules for specialist hirelings. This whole idea came up as easy way to throw some help for the PC’s with a bare minimum of bookkeeping.

Brendan Strejcek made a real cool post a couple of weeks ago about simple corruption for magic-users and I made a comment back then on G+ and well the idea has bounced around in my head and stayed there. So I figured I’d share it here as part of my “Familiars Shouldn’t Suck” rants. I’ve embellished on this idea a bit and twisted it with a Lamentations of the Flame Princess vibe.
Every magic-user has a familiar spirit. This spirit possesses the magic-user. It cannot control him but does drive the wizard to learn more and more spells and perform all sorts of magical experimentation. It is the source of arcane power. It feeds off the magical power summoned by the spell caster and grows in power as the magic-user gains power.
When the magic-user dies, the familiar consumes his soul and erupts from the corpse or even sometimes just reanimates it as demon/eldritch horror of HD equal to the level of the magic-user. Just turn to the Summon Spell and start rolling to see what kind of horror has been added to the world.
And there you go simple and strange. And yes, I know I should have posted this sooner but real life has been really busy of late. Enjoy.

It’s evening time so I figured things are calming down a bit. Time to do some shameless self promotion. Like you’ve probably already figured out, I like Swords & Wizardry. So much so that I’m will to throw a whole bunch of time and some money into publishing some stuff for it. Most of my thoughts are over on Magic Pig Media but I’ve to post more news and updates here about what I have planned.

Swords of a Forgotten Age: The World of Skarynth: This is going to be the first product out the door. Right now, we’re in the final stages of editing and play testing then it’s time for layout. Keep for fingers crossed. This is a Swords & Sorcery setting/source book and heavily influenced by Crypts & Things. We’ve come up with some new mechanics as well as some twists of classic classes. We’ve already got two more supplements planned for this so stay tuned for announcements on those in the future.

Adventures: Also, We’ve got two adventures in the works for Swords & Wizardry. Those are in the rough draft stage. As they get closer to completion expect more announcements on those in the coming months.

A SciFi Hack: I can’t just get this idea out of my head so it’s obvious that I need to follow my muse. Heck, it doesn’t even have a working title yet. I’ve amassed a couple pages of notes and started outlining it. This isn’t going to be a hard science fiction game but something that just mixes and matches a whole host of things that have been bouncing around inside my head. Like I said for the Adventures, stay tuned for more announcements on that.

Super Secret Fantasy Setting X: Heck, you’re not expecting me to come clean on everything. But this is another setting that should have some very familiar tropes to Old School Gamers and still be very interesting. More on that as that rough draft gets done.

I know that’s a lot of projects for a little one-man show. It’s enough to keep me busy for well over the next year and yes I’ve scribbled out notes on my calendar. Heck, I’m already trying to find a 2014 calendar to schedule things. I know better than to announce any rough release dates, things have already gone crazy a couple times. Wish me luck and I’ll keep ranting about these as they get closer to completion.

It’s Swords & Wizardry Appreciation Day and I’ve got a couple of posts lined up to celebrate. I figured I’d start with just an overall rant about the game. First, I’m going to say this. Don’t take this as “You’re playing wrong it.” or any sort of rehash of the Edition Wars. Like the title says “highly opinionated”. I’m not going to rant about every edition and version of the World’s Most Popular Fantasy Roleplaying Game just the ones that I feel are relevant.
Let’s talk for a quick moment about what is different about Swords & Wizardry as compared to the other retro-clones. First there’s the option of using Ascending or Descending AC. Second and most importantly, there’s the One Save Mechanic. Characters (and monsters) just have one Saving Throw. Not three or five. Just one. this may seem over simplified at first glance but it’s not. If you take RAW, there’s modifiers to this based on class and race. Plus there’s plenty of room for GM’s to put their own spin on it by using Ability Score bonuses or other little bits. Plus one of the favorite house rules making the rounds is using the Saving Throw as general mechanic for task resolution. It’s simple and it works.

Pathfinder/3.X: From available data, Pathfinder is out selling D&D so I’m including it here. I’ve played a lot of Pathfinder. Our group has gone through most of the Paizo Adventure Paths. But one thing I’ve thought since the Beta release. Fun game but I’d never want to run it. It’s just so complex and tactical. I’ve never calculated how game time was spent on cross referencing rules. double checking exactly what a condition means and having a spell caster move just right to he can get the most enemies into the area of effect for a spell. Routinely, we’ve used spreadsheets to keep track of all the bonuses, modifiers and penalties for the characters. To put it bluntly, there’s lots of number crunching in Pathfinder. I’d rather spend my time killing monsters and taking their stuff than worrying about game mechanic minutia. Swords & Wizardry is quick, easy and simple. Spend you’re time adventuring and not on accounting.
Little Brown Books/Red Book/Blue Book and their cousins: I’m going to throw in Labyrinth Lord, OSRIC, Basic Fantasy and similar games into this category. I have most of these and the rules are very similar to each other and to Swords & Wizardry. There’s two things I like about Swords & Wizardry that put it ahead of these. First, the option for Ascending AC. It may not pure old school but I like Ascending AC over Descending. The One Save mechanic and easy to read monster stat blocks make the Game Master’s so much simpler than looking up at chart to figure out that Creature X has the Saves of a 5th level fighter. Less time looking at charts, means more time playing. Plus it makes converting adventures and creatures into Swords & Wizardry much easier than the other way around. Easy conversion means that a GM has even more tools at his disposal.
Castles & Crusades: This one deserves a special note. Of all the clones out there, it’s my opinion that Castles & Crusades most resembles Swords & Wizardry. The Siege Engine of Castles & Crusades works nearly same as the One Save Mechanic of Swords & Wizardry. I mentioned converting. Yeah, it’s breeze on this one.
Dungeon Crawl Classics and Lamentations of the Flame Princess: Why in the world would I lump these two together? Because the rules of these two games reinforce a particular theme. They’ve got personality Swords & Wizardry sets in the middle without bring any particular personality to the table. Now that’s a good thing. Because this encourages GM’s to create their own campaigns with their own quirks and personality. Like I said before, rules and other crunchy bits are easily converted into Swords & Wizardry. Embrace it. Make that campaign uniquely your own. Pull in those crazy rules bits from every other game you have and blend it together and come up with something cool.
Quick and simple mechanics. A flexible system that’s very easy to convert various resources into and it’s very good at accepting house rules. It takes the best parts and puts them together in a way that makes the GM’s and the players jobs so much easier so they spend their time on adventuring and not crunching numbers and cross referencing charts and rules. Yeah, that’s why I like Swords & Wizardry. It’s a solid framework that I can easily tweak and build on. I can easily pull bits and pieces from just about any of the retro-clones put them into Swords & Wizardry.

Here’s what I snatched up. A couple of unfinished wooded block sets at the dollar store ($5 each), six feet of 3/4 x 3/4 square wooden doweling ($6) and some 1 inch diameter wooden plugs ($1). After that it was painting and that’s it.

And there you go.

With the Swords & Wizardry Appreciation Day fast approaching let’s throw out a little love for John Reyst who did all that not only the Pathfinder SRD but the fine Swords & Wizardry SRD. Yep, even threw up that little link in the side bar.
Yes, I really like that game. And yes I’m spreading the word. And yes there is a small chance that I might end up with gift certificate by doing so.
I’ll be honest here. Yes, that little certificate would be nice but you know what. This game deserves more love. If you’ve never heard of it or messed around with it then go to the SRD and check it out. It won’t hurt you and you just might discover a cool new game.
